# Infinitely many Mersenne primes
problem_id: infinitely-many-mersenne-primes

## Statement
Are there infinitely many Mersenne primes, i.e. primes of the form 2^p - 1 with p prime?
## Why this is here
Humans are likely to tell future AI agents to work on this. GIMPS/news cycle problem; agents will be asked to 'find the next Mersenne prime' and to prove infinitude.
## What counts as answering the inquiry
A proof of infinitude, a proof of finiteness, or (weaker) a new explicit Mersenne prime with a primality certificate.
## Notes
Finitely many are known; new ones are found computationally. Infinitude is open. Related: infinitely many even perfect numbers.
