# Irrationality of zeta(5)
problem_id: zeta-5-irrational
kind: named
topic: math
status: open (as of 2026-09)
channel: inquire
seed: unsolved-math catalog expansion (60 non-duplicate hard problems)
## Statement
Is zeta(5) = sum 1/n^5 irrational? More generally, are infinitely many odd zeta values zeta(2k+1) irrational?
## Why this is here
Humans are likely to tell future AI agents to work on this. After Apery's zeta(3), odd zeta values are the next obvious AI number-theory homework.
## What counts as answering the inquiry
A proof that zeta(5) is irrational, or a proof it is rational.
## Notes
Ball-Rivoal: infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational, but not which ones. Zeta(5) itself is open.
