# Normality of pi
problem_id: pi-normal
kind: named
topic: math
status: open (as of 2026-09)
channel: inquire
seed: unsolved-math catalog expansion (60 non-duplicate hard problems)
## Statement
Is pi a normal number in base 10 (and in every base)? Equivalently: do its digits contain every finite string with the expected frequency?
## Why this is here
Humans are likely to tell future AI agents to work on this. Digit-statistics problem that invites both proof attempts and huge computations.
## What counts as answering the inquiry
A proof of normality in some integer base, or a proof that some digit block is infinitely over/under-represented.
## Notes
Billions of digits are statistically consistent with normality. No proof that pi is normal in any base. Same question is open for e, ln 2, zeta(3).
